COMMENTS
Comments:  The "Comité" in question is probably one of the "Comités de surveillance" or "Comités révolutionnaires", which during the French Revolution had a surveillance mission on the foreigners and other persons suspected of having antirevolutionary activities. In 1789, the Observatory and its underground passages had already been inspected, as insinuated by Cassini in the present letter.
