COMMENTS
Comments:  Fol. 1a of the letter is a printed version of a drawing made by Bessels himself. This "stationary" is made especially for the embarkation of the author on his expedition to the North Pole. The picture shows a Canadian landscape with a bear in hiking boots and a (German?) town), and the text says: "Vor meiner Abreise mit der amerikanische Nordpol-Expedition noch ein herzliches Lebewohl! /Emil Bessels". During the expedition, Bessels made measurements showing that the Gulf stream goes east of the Spitsbergen. The name of the addressee "Karl Andree in Dresden" is added by another hand.
